Company Report

Huntington Ingalls Is Very Nearly A Pure Play on Long Cycle and Moaty Military Shipbuilding

Regulated margins, mature markets, customer-paid research and development, and long-term revenue visibility allow defense contractors to deliver a lot of cash to shareholders, which makes up for relatively slow growth in this industry. Defense budgets usually ebb and flow with a nation's wealth and its perception of danger: in the US and among its allies both have been on the rise, and geopolitics is leading to larger military budgets than we've seen for decades. For perspective, we estimate that the portions of the US defense budget relevant to Huntington Ingalls and its peers shrank in 2012-17 by 2.6% while they grew in 2018-23 by 6.5%, annualized. We think the contracting budget will continue to grow, but more moderately, averaging around 2.5%-3.0% over the next five years.

Bulls Say, Bears Say

Bulls

The National Defense Strategy prioritizes modernizing the military to counter potential great power adversaries. We think this will increase the proportion of the defense budget available to contractors.

Bears

Competing claims on future US budget spending may depress future defense spending.

Company Profile

Huntington Ingalls Industries is the largest independent military shipbuilder in the US, spun off of Northrop Grumman in 2011. It operates three segments, two of which are storied shipyards: Ingalls produces non-nuclear-powered ships including amphibious landing ships and Arleigh Burke-class destroyers while Newport News produces nuclear-powered ships as the only producer of Gerald Ford-class aircraft carriers and a major subcontractor on Virginia and Columbia-class nuclear submarines. Huntington Ingalls shares production of destroyers and nuclear submarines with General Dynamics' Bath Iron Works and Electric Boat shipyards, respectively. The company’s Mission Technologies segment produces uncrewed sea vessels and provides a range of IT and other services to US government agencies.
