Vinci Wins $3.16 Billion Electrical Conversion Platform Contract in North Sea

Vinci said it was awarded a contract to design, build and install two electrical conversion stations in the North Sea by German's transmission system operator 50Hertz valued at 2.9 billion euros ($3.16 billion).

The French construction company said Wednesday that the deal of the consortium--made up of Dragados Offshore, a subsidiary of Vinci's Cobra IS, and Siemens Energy--includes an offshore platform that converts the alternative current produced by the wind farm LanWin 3 in the North Sea--located 120 km off the German coast--into a high-voltage direct current to reduce electrical losses during transmission to land. These two stations come in addition to the seven offshore power conversion platforms Vinci is currently building.

The offshore converter platforms will be built in Andalusia, Spain, it said. The capacity of both electrical conversion stations will amount to two gigawatts, it said.
